Christmas is all around me... and not a moment too soon.

Who would ever say that it's not difficult to be away from their childhood family at Christmas time? I certainly wouldn't! But, I am also thankful for my new little family who gets to come with me and always be with me no matter where in the world we decide to live.

I love Christmas  and I am so excited to make new family traditions with Tristan and Adrien. I can't wait to see Adrien open his presents this year! He is 19 months this year, last year he was 7 months. I am sure he is going to love tearing into all the wrapping paper!

Paris is beautiful, and even more so at this time of year. Christmas is all around me!

It's in the Celebrations...

Paris West Ward Christmas Party!

Chinese Group Christmas Dinner.

It's in the decorations!!!

It's in the boulangeries...

It's in the family activities... (Like choosing and decorating a tree.)

It's in the delicious smells... (pine trees and baking apple pies...)

It's in the music, the gift giving and receiving... It's in everything, all around us. All of these things, these beautiful things, remind us of the gifts we have from our savior, and help us to celebrate his birth.

Merry Christmas everyone!

To TV or not to TV...

I know I shouldn't let him watch TV until he is two, but sometimes when I need to go on the internet it's just too convenient to let him sit next to me and watch a few videos on Youtube. Can you blame me?

His favorites are:
Sheep in the Island
Scrat Gone Nutty
Pigeon Impossibe
&
Ormie the Pig

I thought I would share in case your kids like shorts too. He loves them and it gives me a few minutes peace to check my email, Facebook, and, hey, even to write this post! ;)
And besides he is just too darn cute with his little blank face staring at the screen. :)

"I got a rock"

As Halloween approached I found myself missing home for than ever. Not because I am not enjoying France, but particularly because Halloween is one of my favorite celebrations, and it is not celebrated the same here.  They do celebrate All Saints Day on November 1st by going to church if they are religious and putting flowers and the graves of loved ones. It’s a school holiday, which is awesome, but there is no trick or treating… and that is the main thing… There are parties at bars for adults and maybe parties at school for children, but like I said no big family celebration and no TRICK OR TREATING.

As Halloween came nearer I began to think of how we would celebrate here with our little family. Of course I am dreaming of when I have children old enough to enjoy getting dressed up just for the fun of it, bobbing for apples, making candied apples, and carving pumpkins, but this year Adrien is still too little, so I had to come up with something else. I bought Snickers and Twix, because they remind me of home, and some chocolate covered dinosaur cookies and bubbles for Adrien, and made little trick or treat bags for the four of us and put them out around our Halloween pumpkin to be discovered by all. Kind of Easter-ish, but I did my best ;) We had them on the 30th because Tristan had an interview on the 31st and his mom was going to be out of town as well.

On Halloween it was just me, Adrien, and some great fall weather, so I thought it would be nice to go out. We happen to live a three minutes walk from Pere Lachaise Cemetery which is reputed to be the worlds most visited cemetery. So, I thought, “Why not, it seems like a spooky thing to do on Halloween.” It was anything but spooky, but we had a great time nonetheless. It was hard to have an eerie feeling in a place so crowded by visitors. Alone in a cemetery maybe, at night certainly, but we were not alone: far from it! and it was not night.  It turned out to be a great idea. Adrien played in the fallen leaves and ran up and down the aisles. He even climbed a few tombstones and entered a few sepulchers, although I did TRY to keep him off. Try being the word, because I am raising a little monkey. ;)

After getting Adrien off to bed I ended my night by watching It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, before going to bed.  In the cartoon the whole gang goes trick or treating together and after each house they each recount how they got candy or cookies or gum, but each time Charlie Brown says, “I got a rock.” All I can say is this: There may be no trick or treating in France, but at least I didn’t get a rock. ;)

Off to the pet stores...

This afternoon we decided we needed a break from all the endless job searching. So, we headed to one of our favorite attractions in Paris, lol, the pet stores. Really though, we go every time we are in Paris, and this time we haven’t been there yet. It's a string of pet shops located just down the street from the Hôtel de Ville, and the Notre-Dame. Lucky us, the walk is very beautiful as well, because it takes us an hour to get there. We ooh-ed and ahh-ed over all the animals and dreamed of the pets we will have one day. ;) It’s especially unique because of the puppies and kittens; we don’t have anything like it at home (at least not that I know of). It’s like a zoo for domestic pets. They also have rabbits and mice, all types of birds, fish, and reptiles. It’s been a great place for the two of us to spend some quality time together, and now Adrien loves it too.
